Rapport

What's changing on the NCE in 2027.

NBCC has published the specifications for the examination that takes effect on 1 July 2027. It is a different exam: shorter, with three answer options instead of four, and organised around six new domains. Here is the whole picture, taken from NBCC's own documents.

The short version

  • 170 questions, not 200. Thirty of them are unscored field-test items.
  • Three answer options per question, not four.
  • Still 3 hours 45 minutes — with an optional 15-minute break halfway.
  • Six new domains, shared with the NCMHCE for the first time.
  • Scored 100–500, with 360 to pass.
  • It applies from 1 July 2027. Test before then and none of this affects you.

The six new domains

Two domains carry 20% each, so between them ethics and intervention account for two-fifths of the exam.

The change most people will underestimate

Three options instead of four. It sounds like the exam got easier, and in a narrow sense it did — a blind guess moves from 25% to 33%. But it changes how you work a question. Much of the standard advice for this exam is elimination: cross off the two obviously wrong answers and choose between what's left. With three options, there is often only one throwaway, so you arrive at the same two-way decision with less help getting there. Practising that final judgment matters more than it used to.

The domain that didn't exist before

Indirect Client Care, at 12%, has no counterpart in the current blueprint. It covers the work that happens around the client rather than in the room: coordinating with other providers, case management, consultation, referral and community resources, documentation and records. Roughly one question in eight. If you are studying from material written for the current exam, this is the part that simply isn't in it.

Which exam will you actually sit?

The new specifications take effect on 1 July 2027. If your test date is before then, you are taking the current exam and nothing above applies to you. If it falls after, you are taking the new one. If your date is near the boundary, confirm it with NBCC rather than with any study guide, including this one.

Where Rapport stands on it

Every one of our 994 questions carries a 2027 domain tag as well as a current one, and every one of the six new domains has enough questions behind it to build a blueprint-correct 170-question exam today — including Indirect Client Care, which most material written for the current exam doesn't touch at all.

What we have not done yet is convert the bank to three options. Our questions are four-option, which is right for the exam as it stands today and will need work before 2027. We would rather tell you that than imply the whole thing is already converted.
